Types of Timber Sales
Auction
A forester compiles information about the stand or stands being offered and sends this to potential timber buyers in the area. The high bidder will have a specified time frame to harvest the timber. In this type of sale, you receive a lump sum payment.
Contract
In some cases, it's better to contract with a particular logger to do a job. First thinnings and smaller volume cuts may not attract enough bidders to make an auction worthwhile. Harvests that occur in environmentally sensitive areas may also require employing a logger who has experience with these types of challenges.
